I drew inspiration from deep-sea marine life, from sea slugs to translucent and bioluminescent fish, whose strangeness and beauty have always fascinated me. However, these creatures often evoke discomfort or even intense fear in some people. This fear, known as thalassophobia, is usually tied to the unknown nature of the ocean depths, the sensation of emptiness, and the imagined presence of hidden monsters lurking in the abyss.
Abyssus offers a more poetic and abstract interpretation of these mysterious underwater environments. Through the creation of a hybrid creature inspired by various forms of marine life, the project aims to reconcile fascination with apprehension by inviting a new perspective on the deep sea.
The result is a 3D film made in Unreal Engine. It also serves as an animation experiment: the creature’s movements are driven by human body motion, captured using the motion capture tool Move.ai. This approach explores a form of organic and unfamiliar physical language, somewhere between human expression and aquatic behavior.
